Description:
Advertising online, on air, and print, is all suffering in my view. What I've done here is create the social site to be advertising free. Why annoy a thousand people with some banner ad to get maybe a couple people to click it. My feeling is you will search for things you are interested in, so I put up a no ad social site and a search engine to use for your searches. Kind of an 'I scratch your back and you scratch mine' deal. Our local search results come from our classified directory giving more personal results. Businesses can list for free here and not have to pay for it like other sites. I'll post in the blog problems I see with current advertising practices, and what Ur2rN will be doing different.
The Internet is like the gold rush
I heard a statistic that by 2010, 80 billion dollars will be spent on internet advertising. By getting everyone educated about Ur2rN, we can literally save good people Billions of dollars in wasted advertising, provide reasonable hosting services, and expand free services in the future. My goal isn't to become the next giant corporation, but to explode the balloon of those that are greedy by continuing to promote the Internet as something it isn't and won't ever be. I still say the Internet is like the 49' gold rush. The folks that profited the most sold the miners picks, shovels, supplies, and not the miners. Don't get me wrong, the Internet is fine for certain goods and services, but it's time to admit that the majority of those buying advertising are only fattening the giant corps and not striking gold. Nobody has taken the real Internet to the people, and that's what we're about.

Annoying ads invade TV
Speaking of intrusive advertising, you know what's bugging me this morning. I'm sitting here with my cup of coffee and watching the TV, and what should appear? A little character strolling across the bottom of my screen to advertise another program. Regular scheduled commercials aren't enough any longer. They now overlay what you're watching, with messages and graphics. Granted it's not a paid advert, but rather self promotion to try to help ratings so they can keep their advertising rates from dropping. Do you think TV adverts increase sales, or are they primarily for brand recognition? I guess the Ur2rN brand will be dependant upon you, the member, since we don't have advertising revenues to pad the budget.
Later,
John
